Jenna and Sarah

I have been tagged by Holly to list 5 things about myself that I haven’t revealed on the blog before. I did memes on the old blog, but I don’t remember what I said! And of course, I’m not going to take the time to look. I’m not very interesting, so this might be kind hard:

1. Once, in 1990, I was Poison’s “tour manager for a day.” I got to walk Bret Michaels out on stage with a flashlight and hang out with them (and Warrant) before and after the show. I was 15 and I was so scared and intimidated the whole time that I hardly said a word.  

2. In 4th, 5th, and 6th grade, I lived in Tokyo. The school was awesome. When we moved back, I felt like I was in a prison. I loved it and someday I so want to go back (but just to visit, not to live).

3. I get motion sickness really easily. I almost always throw up, or at least come dangerously close, when riding an amusement park ride, riding in a small or exceptionally turbulent plane, riding on the dive boat to or from a scuba diving location, riding in the back of a car on a winding road, or the one time I went parasailing.

4. I have really bad vision. Really. I probably mentioned it before, but I don’t remember when it would have come up. I have never met anyone with vision as bad as mine. I’m extremely farsighted and have astigmatism. Supposedly, there is only one company that makes contacts in my prescription, and they are WAAAAAY expensive. I have to get new ones every year and I don’t wear my glasses in public.

5. Jay & I were extras in a commercial a few years ago. It was for Luby’s, which I detest, but it was fun. We have a friend who works for the ad agency that does their advertising. He asked if we’d do it and we said sure. They did our makeup and everything. With one of those airbrushes. Now I know why celebrities alway look so good…my skin was flawless all day. We got paid $50 each, but it took all day. They shot a ridiculous amout of takes. The commercial never aired because the “star,” who was a Latin Grammy winner, was arrested for child molestation or something like that shortly after the shoot.

I’m so sick of all of us being sick. For at least the past month, at least one of us has been sick. Jenna’s fine now that her ear infection is gone, but I’m on day 13 of this sinus infection or whatever it is. My z-pak did NOTHING. Not a thing. But now that it’s winding down, Jay’s home sick with a stomach virus. And the way things are going, Jenna & I will probably get it too. Weeeeeeeeeeee! At least I’m positive, right? I can’t remember when all 3 of us were well at the same time…

Does anyone else lay in bed at night and write blog posts in your head? Maybe it’s just me. And somehow, they never actually make it to the blog. I started this new blog with the intention of having random posts that had nothing to do with Jenna. That’s not happening–it’s all about her. That’s OK.

I forgot a significant milestone for Jenna when I wrote her 11 month letter. About a month ago, she quit spitting up! Well, not really quit, but now she just spits up like a normal baby. It’s been so wonderful. We don’t have to keep bibs on her 24/7! We don’t have to make sure we have at least 4 burp cloths with us when we leave the house, and don’t have to have a burp cloth in at least one hand at all times. We don’t have to warn other people when they hold her, and then constantly be ready to catch whatever may fly out of her mouth. When I pick her up from daycare, she usually is wearing the same outfit that she had on when I dropped her off! We no longer have to color-coordinate her food to her outfit, and she can now eat vegetables during the day, instead of color-less fruit. It’s been great! Much less of a hassle.

We have been learning that Jenna is not shy. I think most kids probably aren’t at this age, but she doesn’t seem to be intimidated by anyone. The majority of last weekend was spent with Jay’s family, since his second grandmother passed away (the first passed away just 10 days before). There were a whole lot of people at the memorial service, and all she wanted to do was walk around and talk to everyone. I know she didn’t get that from me! I kind of hope it’s an indication of how she’ll remain, but I’m sure it’s a phase, and the shy phase will come up soon.

Speaking of shy kids…last night, a friend called to ask if I could keep her daughter for a couple of hours. I said sure–we’re not going anywhere. This little girl will be 3 in July. I thought most kids that age were pretty playful and outgoing, but of course this poor girl got left in a strange house with people she didn’t know (we’d only been around her twice before). She hadn’t eaten yet, so her mom said she’ll eat probably whatever we have. We’d already eaten, so we gave her a little of what we thought she might like. I don’t know if she just didn’t like what we had, or if she was just scared, but she didn’t eat a thing. Eventually she ate a bunch of goldfish, but wouldn’t eat the pasta or the hamburger or the fruit that I thought she might like. And we are so clueless to what older kids do. She was in the high chair watching Finding Nemo and looking at the goldfish we gave her, and Jay & I were in the kitchen trying to decide what to give her. It went something like:

Me: Do you think she would like this pasta?
Jay: I have no idea. Maybe we should put tomato sauce on it. Would she drink milk or water?
Me: I don’t know–would she want a regular cup, or a sippy cup?
Jay (laughing): I don’t know. Should we give her a fork, or does she use one yet?
Me (laughing harder): I don’t know! This baby spoon is too small for the pasta but I’m afraid to give her a regular fork.

Well, it didn’t matter since she didn’t eat anything anyway! When we would ask her something, she would just look down and was afraid to talk. Poor thing. She started to warm up about 10 minutes before her mom came to pick her up. Fortunately, Jenna was exceptionally good last night. She was happy to walk around and play with her toys. Not fussy, not difficult. The little toddler girl didn’t want Jenna anywhere near her though, which may have been a problem if she’d been at our house longer than 2 hours.
